Gareth Southgate backs Raheem Sterling to win over England fans

The England team take a look around the stadium prior to the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier between England and Slovakia at Wembley Stadium

England and Germany secured their place in next year's World Cup in Russian Federation with victories over Slovenia and Northern Ireland respectively.

Following the win over Slovenia, which saw England cement first place in Group F, Southgate claimed that the performance "highlighted where we are" and will need to step up their game between now and June.

"To me, success is to see the team continue to develop", he told BBC Radio.

In the likes of Kane, with 11 goals in 22 internationals, Manchester United's young striker Marcus Rashford and Kane's Tottenham Hotspur team mate Dele Alli, who was suspended on Thursday, England do have exciting talent in their ranks.

"I am not going to hide and say we are exactly where we want to be or the performance was what we'd have liked it to be".

Scotland's hopes of reaching Russian Federation remain alive after a late victor gave them a 1-0 victory over 10-man Slovakia.

And Alderweireld, who feels no other striker is better than Kane in the Premier League, believes the England worldwide has set his sights on becoming the best in the world. They are suffering a little bit from the outcome of the last 25 or 30 years. "Firstly, I don't think we are great in defence and secondly, that system allows us more players in midfield, which helps us keep hold of the ball".

Harry Kane has been named England captain for the crucial World Cup qualifier at home to Slovenia on Thursday.

The teams met past year in Ljubljana, and Slovenia was able to hold England to a scoreless draw.

This did improve after the break but all in all, this wasn't the kind of display that had anyone believing England stood a realistic chance of getting near to winning the tournament in Russian Federation next summer.

"This team has potential but we have a hell of a lot of work to do", said Southgate. Sterling and Kane would have scored if not for goal-line clearances, and England looked set to get a goal in the final minutes. "But we have got goalscorers".

"Late goals have been key and we knew they had to win".
