Chicago remembers Tom Petty's first and last performances here

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed at Xcel Energy Center on June 3

The legendary Tom Petty, author and performer of such American anthems as "Refugee", "The Waiting" and "Free Fallin, '" has died at the age of 66 after suffering cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Tom Petty has left a massive hole in the music industry, and will be missed by both musicians and fans around the world. Forgive me if this seems like an impossibly tall order.

"They decided as a group, Capricorn, that particular type music was really not fitting with what they were trying to do at that time", Grand said.

Many members of the News 12 New Jersey on-air staff were big Tom Petty fans and were personally impacted by his death. His songs are in the atmosphere.

In all, Petty voiced Elroy "Lucky" Kleinschmidt on 28 episodes of King of the Hill (the rocker also voiced one of Lucky's friends, Mud Dobber).

Tom Petty inspired singers and songwriters everywhere. Before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, he performed with his first band, the Sundowners, around the area. "He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours Tuesday morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived". I mean, those chords - those opening chords are iconic. Cameron Crowe, the director behind films such as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, tells host Tom Power that he would have never picked up a camera if it wasn't for Petty. "God bless you! Goodnight!" said Petty just before walking off the stage. Being a Country musician myself, I admire what he did for the genre.

We will keep you updated as more news becomes available. According to his long-time manager, "He died peacefully at 8:40 PM on Monday, surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends". Even though I did meet him the one time, I was happy enough to have him sign the guitar.
