LEROY: Rudolph, OSU prevail against improved Tech defense

OSU BIG 12 BASEBALL

As will Oklahoma State, which knows this unit is different. The Cowboys were not able to score off the interception either, though, as Tech continued to keep momentum and tie the game 34-34 in the fourth quarter.

Despite a two to one advantage in total first half yardage - 343 to 172 - Oklahoma State led the game just 21-17 at halftime.

In the second quarter Tech came out swinging with a touchdown within the first minute bringing the score to 14-7.

The Red Raiders are now 3-1 on the season after the loss.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders had their first loss of the season against No. 15 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Jones AT&T Stadium.

With the Cowboys ahead 7-0 and threatening to score again, Rudolph sailed a pass too high for his intended receiver and into the arms of Texas Tech's DeMarcus Fields, who was making his first career start at cornerback.

Mike Yurcich, Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator, said the difference he sees is that the Red Raiders have simplified things, allowing players to "play with less hesitation".

So, yes this game could have gotten out of hand if it wasn't for the play of the Tech defense. Shimonek was just 29 of 45 for 330 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Texas Tech ended up tying the game at 7-7 halfway through the first quarter after a pick-six by DaMarcus Fields. Two plays later, Rudolph faked a handoff and ran untouched to the right corner of the end zone with 1:12 remaining.

On Oklahoma State's next possession, they got the ball within the Texas Tech 5-yard line before having to settle for a field goal attempt on a 4th & Goal from the 2-yard line. And make no mistake, going into the Jones on a Saturday night against Texas Tech's high-powered offense wasn't easy.

After Tech cut the deficit to seven points early in the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders gambled with an onside kick and it paid off - they recovered the ball.

Nic Shimonek completed a 25-yard pass to Antoine Wesley at midfield before four straight incompletions that clinched the win for the Cowboys. They consistently rolled down the field with little resistance, finishing every first half drive in the red zone. The Red Raiders held off Arizona State at home and earned a surprising victory - spearheaded by their defense - at Houston, snapping the Cougars' 16-game home win streak.

After the missed field goal and starting at their own 20-yard line, the Texas Tech drive stalled at their own 37-yard line and they were forced to punt with 3:30 left in the game.

"We lost. It doesn't feel good at all", Shimonek said.
