Madrid are still without a win in three La Liga home games this season, drawing with Levante and Valencia, and losing 1-0 to Real Betis last time out.

Portuguese global Cristiano Ronaldo provided the superb assist for the 25-year-old Spaniard who curled the ball at the far corner of the post.

Real Madrid (4-3-3): Keylor Navas (GK); Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Nacho; Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos; Lucas Vazquez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marco Asensio.

"We will see tomorrow [how he is]", Zidane said regarding the Welsh winger's health. "But, as always, we don't like to take any risks".

Those to have signed Madrid contracts have all been presented in separate ceremonies, but Zidane will not be doing the same for his own new deal, which he says has been agreed.

Isco has scored more goals than any other La Liga midfielder since the start of 2017 (in all competitions) - 11.

"I am very happy that he has renewed", said Zidane. We must prove ourselves again every day - that is what I like about this job, and my players too. Keeping himself at bay, Zidane cleared himself by saying he will be the last one to get involved in such issues as the discussion is between the club and player.

The political tension also bubbled over at the Santiago Bernabeu where Real fans waved Spanish flags and sang "Viva Espana" (long live Spain).

The pair are joined on the sidelines by Theo Hernandez, Karim Benzema, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo.

Speculation over Ronaldo's future at Madrid will not affect the club top goal scorer's performances, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has said.

Barcelona have won all six games so far this season.

As for Espanyol, Pablo Piatti was ruled out of the match due to a muscular problem, which saw Marc Roca come into a team which included both Gerard Moreno and Leo Baptistao in the final third of the field.

It took until the 22nd minute for Real Madrid to have another attempt of real note, and Luka Modric's effort drifted wide of the away side's post as the score remained 0-0 at the mid-point of the first period.
