They chose to keep their separation from the public eye at first, while they adjusted to their split and focused their attention on son Axl, four.

Their joint statement about their split indicated that their relationship had ended earlier this year, but it's unclear exactly when they called it quits.

Fergie talked to People.com about the breakup and how it had been starting to get hard fielding questions about their romance, especially since she's been in the limelight promoting her new album, Double Duchess.

"She said: "(Axl's school has helped as) we have a co-op so Josh and I would walk there several times before the school season. "There's no flawless time, so we just made a decision to do it".

She added: "It's so great". Sources claim the pair has been living separate lives for a while, now but wanted to adjust the family to the change before announcing their split to the public.

The Battle Creek actor, 44, and the "Big Girls Don't Cry" hitmaker, 42, have been open in the past about facing difficulties in their marriage. Especially all that time they were pretending to still be together.

"He's not afraid. He doesn't feel like he's not man enough", she told the publication in 2015.

Meanwhile, Fergie is focusing on the release of her long-gestating sophomore solo album, "Double Dutchess", which features their son on the track "Enchanté (Carine)". "Whether it be helping online with all the naysayers or just helping me with the fashion or just sometimes being there for me when I need to read something that's filled with love..." "We just grew. And we grew into realizing that we wanted the same things in life".

We continue to wish Fergie, Josh and their family and friends all the very best.
