FedExCup update: Phil thrilled to be back in the hunt

Leishman shot a 64 to go with his opening-round 62 and is at 16-under, three shots ahead of Day and Fowler.

Day's tee shot at the 188-yard par-three 17th landed just in front of the green, took a couple of bounces and trickled into the hole, much to the Australian's surprise. "Seeing the last two days, I know I still have it in myself to be able to hit the correct shots and go out there and try and win".

"My last hole-in-one was at Turning Stone (Resort Championship) in 2008, so I've had a bit of a dry spell", Day said after his round.

"It was a lucky hole-in-one, I guess".

The BMW Championship brings back memories for Leishman, who was paired with golf icon and 14-time major victor Tiger Woods at the tournament in 2009 and it something he remembers fondly as he looks to add a third PGA Tour title to his name. "That's why earlier I said I'm going to donate that auto back to help another student because I am in a fortunate position and being able to not only impact one person but be able to impact another person's life, to be able to get them to go through college as well is huge".

4 p.m.: Big par putt for Jason Day at No. 10 to stay T-2 at 15 under.

The generous Day then donated the BMW M760i he won for the ace to the Evans Scholar foundation which provides college scholarships to caddies. A bogey on 13th was made up with a birdie on 15th, but closing bogeys on 17th and 18th spoilt his card.

It hasn't been easy for defending champion Dustin Johnson, who is facing putting problems.

The 24-year-old Smith needs at least a fourth-placed finish to advance to next week's 30-man Tour Championship. Phil Mickelson is trying to work his way into the top 30, and while he sputtered with two birdies, two bogeys and too many pars, he drilled an approach to 5 feet on the par-5 14th for an eagle.

His 69 took him to 7-under 135, in a tie for 12th. Second-placed Thomas also carded 70 to fall 11 strokes behind.

Leishman came into the BMW Championship ranked seventh in the FedEx Cup standings after finishing third at the Dell Technologies Championship.

The BMW Championship is the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup series and will determine the top-five seedings for next week's Tour Championship.
