Rebel Wilson awarded $4.5 million in damages in defamation case

"The jury's verdict established Bauer Media's publications had branded Ms Wilson a serial liar who had fabricated nearly every aspect of her life", said Dixon at the Supreme Court in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Previous awards were "disappointingly low", he said; the result setting a likely record for court awarded payouts: it is four times the previous high for the state of Victoria, set in 2001 when former Olympian Ron Clarke was awarded nearly $1.1 million after being defamed by ABC program The 7.30 Report.

The jury found Bauer had said Wilson lied about her age, claiming to be six years younger, and had falsely claimed to have been named Rebel at birth.

Bauer Media appreciated the risk of reputational damage to the plaintiff, and did not care whether Ms. Wilson suffered it as it pursued it's own corporate objective.

Bauer Media executives said they were considering the judgement when contacted by the Associated Press.

She also claimed that as a result she lost roles on two films and was unable to land any further work.

"The jury answered every question put to them in Rebel's favour".

"He said the idea of the exasperated defamation and the phenomenal degree of dispersal makes vindication of specific significance.

Justice Dixon's award recognises the serious harm caused to Rebel's reputation and held Bauer Media to account for what the judge accepted was an orchestrated campaign against her". She has said she will give the money away. "The judge said he knew that the info from anonymous paid source was false". It is 4 times the Australian record. "I will be putting that money to good use by donating it to charity and investing in an Australian film".

Wilson stated that the case had exposed the "disgusting and disgraceful" behaviour of the tabloid media and that she looked forward to rebuilding her career.

"Equity Dixon has granted me a record entirety and I'm amazingly thankful for that".
