Hurricane Irma weakening but still presents a threat to life, say forecasters

Hurricane Irma Pounds Florida Extent Of Damage Not Yet Clear

Florida Power & Light is prepared to help smaller utility companies restore power to customers on Florida's west coast where Hurricane Irma is taking aim.

"What we really fear more than anything is that storm surge", Buckhorn told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Sunday.

This is the first year on record that the continental United States has had two Category 4 hurricane landfalls in the same year. The hurricane weakened to a tropical storm Monday morning as it moved north towards Georgia.

Irma's eye wall came ashore not long after it was downgraded from a Category 4 to a Category 3 storm on the five-point Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.

"Right now, we are anxious about lives, not cost", Trump said after returning from Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland where he monitored the storm and met with his Cabinet.

"My family only started to worry when the path of the storm started to turn west", Duncan said.

While the eye of Hurricane Irma is not expected to go over the east coast, a powerful storm surge could still bring severe flooding to the area. We will continue to post updates on Irma as forecast details become more clear.

Hurricane Irma has officially made landfall in Florida, and a new report suggests that the storm could potentially change the course of history for the panhandle state.

While the projected track showed Irma raking the state's Gulf Coast, forecasters warned that the entire state - including the Miami metropolitan area of 6 million people - was in extreme peril because of the sheer size of the storm. The storm left at least 27 people dead as it tore across the Caribbean.

The worst of Irma is likely yet to come for much of Middle Georgia.

This means impacts will be low for central North Carolina. The storm could also produce isolated tornadoes in the Carolinas early next week.

American Airlines said earlier Sunday that limited operations at its Miami hub would resume at 5 p.m. Monday, but that plan was shelved with the airport's latest announcement.

-Weakening winds on Monday night. "They just made sure to have plenty of food at our house, and we have a full-house generator that comes on automatically when the power goes out".
