Lee schools closed through Friday

The Butts County Senior Center will also be closed Monday and Tuesday.

In metro Atlanta, Butts County, Griffin-Spalding County, Lamar County and Pike County Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday.

In addition, all school-related activities are canceled for the same period.

This decision is being made in an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, parents and staff as SC prepares for the impacts of Hurricane Irma.

As of mid-afternoon Friday, none of the Midlands' public school systems had announced closures, although it is typical of them to follow county offices' lead on closings and delays. The school district also advised everyone to make plans and complete preparations early.

Francis Marion University will close on Friday at 12:30 p.m.in advance of Hurricane Irma, allowing students to evacuate prior to anticipated mandatory coastal evacuations on Saturday, according to a press release.

Jacksonville University said it is monitoring the situation and will announced a decision by 5 p.m. Wednesday on whether to cancel Friday classes and events.

"The campus is being fully prepared around the clock in the event of inclement weather from Irma". FSU said class schedules remain unchanged for now, but university officials will take appropriate action if necessary.
