Hardee County is an interior county in Florida southeast of Tampa. According to the Sheriff's Office, Bridges, a 13-year veteran of the agency, was driving home to pick up items and return to the shelter.

Julie Ann Bridges, a 42-year-old Hardee County deputy who was on duty, was driving her marked patrol auto eastbound on her way home when the front of her auto collided with Ossman's vehicle, the Highway Patrol said. He was headed for duty at the Hardee Correctional Institution.

"We are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fellow officers at this time", Jones said in a statement.
