Quickly strengthening Jose, Katia tropical storms upgraded to hurricanes

Additional strengthening is forecast, and Jose could be near major hurricane (wind speed greater than 110 mph) strength on Friday.

Hurricane Jose officially became a major hurricane Thursday evening as the National Hurricane Center said the hurricane had top winds at 120 miles per hour.

Like Irma, Jose is a Cape Verde hurricane, a type of storm that forms in the far eastern Atlantic, near the Cape Verde Islands (now known as Cabo Verde).

The initial storm track shows the hurricane is several days away from possibly impacting any land.

Hurricane Irma, the strongest storm in the history of Atlantic continues to wreak havoc over the Caribbean and is likely to move forward and cause some damage to Florida and other states of Southeast United States. It is in the Atlantic, moving behind Category 5 Hurricane Irma, also in the northwest direction.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect, though forecasters warned the Leeward Islands to monitor the storm.

A hurricane watch was issued for Antigua and Barbuda, devastated by Irma on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Katia became a Category 1 hurricane in the southern Gulf of Mexico not too far from where Harvey formed two weeks ago.

"University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy says Irma "could easily be the most costly storm in USA history, which is saying a lot considering what just happened two weeks ago" in Texas".

A Category 1 hurricane, Katia was 210 miles (335 km) east of the port of Tampico, blowing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (130 km per hour), and may be close to major hurricane strength by the time it is forecast to hit land this weekend, the NHC said. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is stationary with little overall motion expected though late Thursday.

- Floridians should heed any evacuation order, Gov. Rick Scott said Wednesday. Isolated amounts of 10 inches are possible. The western quadrant of the storm was over the east coast state of Veracruz, Mexico.
