All Jaguars and Land Rovers to be part electrified from 2020

"Hello, my name is Sayer. I am the steering wheel of the future"

Big news from the fancy auto industry this morning, as Jaguar has announced that from 2020 all of its cars will be fully electrified or hybrids. "By 2020 the company will offer customers the option of electrification on all its new auto lines (and half of its vehicle line-up)". No other reproduction or distribution is permitted without prior written consent. Based on a 1968 Series 1.5 Roadster, the E-Type Zero features an electric powertrain capable of hitting 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds.

In the more immediate future, the British manufacturer has created an all-new classic E-Type with an electric engine capable of 0-60mph in just 5.5 seconds. The vehicle is a part of Jaguar's Past improvement project.

For now the E-Type Zero remains a prototype vehicle, but there's serious production intent if customer interest is strong enough.

Ian Callum, director of design at Jaguar, said in a Tech Fest panel entitled "The Electric Switch" that he believes that he's designed his last combustion engine auto, reinforcing this message that JLR is serious about electric moving forward so we're expecting to see a lot more changes across the portfolio. This means the new stuff will either be fully electric, plug-in hybrid, or a standard hybrid.

Every Jaguar and Land Rover launched from 2020 will be electrified

To demonstrate how new technologies could change its portfolio, Jaguar is today showing off its electric credentials at an event called Jaguar Tech Fest, which is being held near Kings Cross Station in London.

Jaguar Land Rover says with Future Type's interface you can separately access your different digital orbits of work, family or play, dialling up what you do need, and dialling down what you don't.

"Our aim with E-Type Zero is to future-proof classic auto ownership". The steering wheel "doesn't just stay in your auto - it lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion", with a Siri-style personal assistant which can "caarry out hundreds of tasks" including ordering shopping and and knowing if you are running out of milk.

Overall, the new drivetrain is lighter than the one it replaces, improving the car's handling, but in a bid to further ensure harmony between old-tech (suspension geometry, brakes) and modern electric power, the motor itself offers a modest 220 kW.
