Black is back: Hokies, WVU renew Black Diamond Trophy rivalry

It was the first start in quite some time for Grier too. [Offensive guard] Grant Lingafelter went out in the second quarter with a knee injury and will have an MRI [Sunday].

Some of the biggest storylines to follow in those two games included the probable last season opener for Josh Rosen with UCLA, coaches on the hot seat, and Will Grier's first game with West Virginia. It ended up being a classic.

Fred Jackson, despite a balky back, not only made it to the game from MI, where he is the head coach at Ypsilanti Community High School, but also was on the field to celebrate with his son as Virginia Tech players hoisted the Black Diamond Trophy awarded to the victor of the showdown between the contentious border rivals. Because Virginia Tech wins, West Virginia wins, Rish Equipment wins, because we're all in this together.

"Josh Jackson was big-time today", Edmunds said.

"It was kind of simple", Jackson said.

Jackson was 15 for 26 passing for 235 yards and a touchdown. Was it clean? No. can we get a lot better? Jackson's poise, however, really stood out more than his production. "He just called me, and it was awesome". And in 1999 Virginia Tech great Michael Vick pulled of "The Miracle in Morgantown".

The first points came courtesy of Virginia Tech place kicker Joey Slye's 25-yard field goal with 6:10 left in the opening quarter.

West Virginia and Virginia Tech may not have the horses to crash the playoff discussion themselves this year, but on Sunday night it became clear that they are nearly definitely going to get in the way of a contender that had been en route to the final four.

"It was really good for someone who hadn't played in two years", said head coach Dana Holgorsen of Grier's performance. The Hokies also have one of their most prized recruits in school history coming in Devon Hunter, which they are not totally sure which position he will settle in at yet.

Inside the numbers - There was a little chatter on Twitter throughout the game about the Hokies not running the ball enough, and it ramped up after pass attempts on third-and-1 and third-and-2 in the second quarter fell incomplete. "I thought we played well", Holgorsen said. "He was very proud of me, and I was glad that I could play like that and he could come see it".

"There wasn't anything that happened where I watched and thought 'That was terrible'".

It was a tough ball to catch, but Sills wasn't hearing that. Can we get a lot better? But that didn't stop the nerves from sneaking in as the season opener against West Virginia got closer.

West Virginia: Along with breaking in Grier, West Virginia is looking to find him some reliable targets from an inexperienced bunch.

Virginia Tech got a huge kickoff return, and Jackson threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Cam Phillips on the next play to give Virginia Tech the lead again. The other was caught by junior wideout Gary Jennings, who set career highs in both catches (13) and yards (189).

Virginia Tech: The Hokies are going with a committee of running backs and 190-pound sophomore Deshawn McClease made a case to be in the mix along with Steve Peoples and Travon McMillian. He showed big potential with the Gators, passing for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns in six games. They averaged more than 5 yards per carry.
