The Toffees' highest profile signing was Wayne Rooney, who grew up an Everton fan and started his professional career with the club.

Hughes, meanwhile, will hope that his side can spring an opening day upset and get themselves off to a better start than last season when it took them until October to register their first league win.

Morata contributed 15 LaLiga goals despite starting only 14 league games for Madrid last season and Chelsea need him to make an immediate impact, with star man Eden Hazard out for the opening weeks as he recovers from an ankle injury.

The former Manchester United skipper starts up front alongside fellow summer arrival Sandro Ramirez in a 3-5-2 formation.

"They've got a good side and they've spent money from letting good players go, perhaps similar to Southampton a couple of years ago".

"Like everybody knows we are still working on some targets and that is hard, but if we can do the business we want I think we are stronger than last season".

"But still now we really have one striker, in my opinion. We can improve and spend money but everyone can improve and is spending money", he explained.

"When I came here of course it was a different situation", said Koeman.

"It is hard because if we had Bolasie and Coleman available and we have Funes available, the situation is different to now", he told the Liverpool Echo. "I heard some rumours that the talks broke down but we are still in negotiations with Swansea".

"It is hard to replace Romelu Lukaku", he said in Thursday's press conference. I don't say impossible but 25 goals is a lot and we need to find other ways.

Mark Hughes has warned his Stoke side not to get dazzled in the spotlight of the Rooney show.

Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy has been left out of Everton's squad for their Premier League opener against Stoke City as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

"It's one that's frustrated a lot of people, not least myself, but now it's likely to get done unless there's any last-minute hitches, but we don't anticipate any".
