His provocative public declarations, a break from the careful language of his predecessors, have only grown louder as the week as gone on. The days of war rhetoric have alarmed global leaders.

Its two large USA military bases occupy about one-third of the island.

Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, estimated the risk of a military conflict between the US and North Korea as "very high", and said Moscow was deeply concerned.

North Korea did not threaten Guam with a nuclear attack, but the crisis between Pyongyang and the United States has stirred fears that a nuclear conflict could break out in the region. It had been known the two sides had discussions to secure the June release of an American university student.

It's not the first time North Korea has threatened Guam, which is a crucial, strategic hub for US forces in the Pacific.

The tension comes on the heels of an intelligence report that suggested North Korea has miniaturized nuclear weapons to fit on missiles. The tourist district of Tumon, home to many of Guam's hotels and resorts, is in between. North Korea wants a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, which remains open-ended even after an armistice was signed in 1953. At a park in central Pyongyang on Friday evening, young people practiced volleyball and grandparents and parents watched children on climbing frames and swings. In a statement this week, Bordallo called North Korea's threat to target Guam "dangerous", saying she has discussed threats with Mattis and other defense leaders, who have "consistently reassured me that Guam is protected".

There is no sense fretting, she says, about a situation way beyond their control.

With no choice but to deal directly with North Korea's ceaseless warmongering, Washington could only try to get its allies behind its cause of keeping the world safe from nuclear annihilation through the power of the spoken word and not much else.

That puts its total population of 170,000 in range of the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles that Kim Jong Un's regime has threatened to fire as a counter-punch to President Donald Trump's warning that the US would respond with "fire and fury" to provocative actions by North Korea.

What's the status of the USA nuclear arsenal? Washington and Seoul say the exercises are defensive in nature and crucial to maintaining a deterrent against North Korean aggression.
