Part of Exeter Hospital evacuated over odor; 20 people treated

Exeter Hospital in Exeter N.H

Crews described it a "mass casualty incident", and they evacuated more than 20 patients.

The operating room was evacuated and patients were taken to the parking lot and grassy areas close to the hospital, about 50 miles north of Boston.

Aerial footage captured this morning shows a row of gurneys outside the hospital's emergency room, where patients were being traiged.

A hospital spokesperson told WMUR-TV that an unknown odor was detected at Exeter Hospital around 11:15 a.m. ET, with staff and patients complaining of nausea and dizziness.

State and local officials are still working to determine a cause.

Vasapolli said all affected staff members have either been released or transferred to other hospitals.

The fire department in neighboring Kingston said it sent two ambulances to the scene.

'Most experienced only minor symptoms and received supportive treatment, ' it said.

The emergency department and inpatient operation rooms remained closed, but other areas of the hospital were re-opened, according to Ms Vasapolli.
