Eagles trade Jordan Matthews, pick to Bills for CB

Matthews, along with a 2018 third-round pick, was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Bills for cornerback Ronald Darby. He's received just 42 targets while playing on the outside, accumulating 27 receptions for 284 yards and one touchdown on those targets.

Sammy Watkins' yards per reception rate over the last 3 seasons is the 4th-best in the National Football League (min. 100 catches over that stretch).

As for what the Eagles are getting in Darby, Roseman said: "He has rare speed. We wish Jordan all the best, but we did what we thought was best for our team going forward". Darby, the Bills' second-rounder in 2015, was a starting corner for Buffalo a year ago and was expected to take on an even bigger load in the wake of Stephon Gilmore's departure in free agency. He intercepted two passes as a rookie with the Bills and started 14 games in 2016, logging 69 tackles and deflecting 12 passes. Rookie Sidney Jones could also become a factor when he's recovered from a ruptured Achilles tendon. "It is hard to find those guys".

Matthews has been a proven, productive slot receiver for three years, but he's not dynamic, not explosive and entered the final year of his four-year rookie deal.

Roseman said it was a deal that could not have been made past year because the receiver group wasn't as strong as he perceives it to be at the moment, especially with the additions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. The Eagles have several different options for the slot, starting with Nelson Agholor, who'll get the first chance to prove that his impressive training camp signifies an awakening after two dismal seasons. You see him go against the players that we go against in our division - the Bills in 2015 played the NFC East, so you have that look. Tight End Zach Ertz was next with 106, then Dorial Green-Beckham with 74.

That was reflected in the reaction of some of the players on Twitter when the trade was announced.

Eagle's QB Carson Wentz reacted to the news on Instagram, saying, "Crazy part of this business". You'll always be my boy both on & off the field. J-Matt was the best teammate and friend you could ask for.

Interestingly, the Bills and Eagles will play each other Thursday night in their second preseason game.

Darby is under contract for two more years, which is perhaps where the Bills get off asking for more out of the swap. "But we have to do what's best in moving forward".
