US News & World Report ranks Wake Baptist No. 2 in state

Massachusetts General Hospital made it to U.S. News and World Report's list of the Best Hospitals.

U.S. News also ranked hospitals by each state, and Hopkins came in first in the comparison of Maryland hospitals.

Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro was tied for sixth among 18 N.C. hospitals given best regional recognition, while Forsyth Medical Center was tied for ninth and High Point Regional Hospital was tied for 16th.

The U.S. News rankings follow a report last month that gave Duke a mix of excellent and passing grades in most areas - like breast removal, coronary bypass and knee replacement surgery - but a failing grade in hip surgeries. Central DuPage Hospital is nationally ranked in two specialties with one high performing specialty and eight high performing procedures/conditions.

The annual rankings compare over 4,500 hospitals and health systems across the country.

To be nationally ranked, the publication said a hospital has to excel in caring for the sickest and most medically complex patients, which it says focuses on typical Medicare patients.

The health system earned national accolades in 15 of the ranking's 16 areas of medical specialties.

The Best Hospitals Honor Roll is a distinction awarded to 20 USA hospitals that deliver the highest quality of care across a range of specialties, procedures and conditions.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center came in at 11th, up from 17th previous year.

UNC Rex Healthcare ranked third in the region and eighth in the state, ranking highly in nine procedures and conditions.

Four other specialties listed as "high-performing" are: orthopedics, cancer, rehabilitation, and gastroenterology/GI surgery.

Fellow KNI co-director Linda Van Eldik, who also is director of the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, was pleased with national rankings in Neurology and Neurosurgery as well as Geriatrics.

The Medical Center of Aurora was also recognized as high performing in five adult specialties which includes Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Nephrology, and Pulmonology. University of Iowa Health Care in February opened a new $360 million, 14-floor, stand-alone children's hospital - adding 134 pediatric beds and 507,000 square feet to the UI Hospitals and Clinics main campus. "We're proud to be included on the Best Hospitals list".
