Google employee's anti-diversity memo goes viral, prompts response from execs

Anti-diversity document written by Google employee encounters mass internal criticism

A memo from a senior software engineer that went "internally viral" at Google last week titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber" reportedly laid out a manifesto for why women are less well suited for engineering work, and why the company doesn't need programs to recruit racial minorities either.

The document and resulting employee pushback come at a time of increased scrutiny for tech companies over sexual harassment and hostility towards women in the workplace.

This document has been widely shared throughout the company's engineering teams, with the Google Doc failing to load at several points on Friday night due to mass simultaneous readership.

The 10-page manifesto, entitled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber", was initially shared on an internal messaging service before spreading throughout the company, according to an employee who spoke to BuzzFeed News on condition of anonymity for fear of being fired.

The memo has also highlighted significant issues in Google like the political beliefs of employees being targeted, enmity against the "leftist" school of thought, and trying to shape the perspectives of employees' forcefully.

"When it comes to diversity and inclusion, Google's left bias has created a politically correct monoculture that maintains its hold by shaming dissenters into silence", it reads.

Google has not yet responded to our request for comment. "Women generally also have a stronger interest in people rather than things, relative to men".

In response, Danielle Brown, Google's newly-named vice president of diversity, integrity, and governance, wrote in a statement that the memo's contents do not represent values that Google "endorses, promotes or encourages". Gizmodo obtained and published it in full after this story went live.

She stated that diversity and inclusion are fundamental and will be cultivated no matter what, this being the way to success.

At least one male ex-Google employee penned a response vehemently disagreeing with the memo's conclusions, calling it "incredibly stupid and harmful" and saying its conclusions about gender fly in the face of all research done on that topic over decades.

"But that discourse needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws", she added.

Former Google engineer Erica Baker, who gained attention previous year for her Medium posts about diversity, responded to the latest controversy, saying she's "disappointed but unsurprised".

Google is also being sued by the US Labor Department, which accuses the search giant of systematically paying its female employees less than it pays men.

"One of the aspects of the post that troubled me deeply was the bias inherent in suggesting that most women, or men, feel or act a certain way".
