Protesters in Paris Rally against Israeli PM's Visit

Netanyahu

French president Emmanuel Macron says his glamorous Paris charm offensive on Donald Trump might have changed the U.S. president's mind about climate change.

Netanyahu and Macron were due to hold face to face talks at the Élysée Palace, where French media said they would discuss Syria, Iran and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Macron said France had organised it and blasted those who would seek to deny the state's role in the affair. Marine Le Pen, Mr Macron's far-right opponent in this year's election, drew strong criticism when she suggested France was not responsible for the tragedy.

Over 13,000 Jews were rounded up by French police on July 16 and 17, 1942 in Paris and transported to Auschwitz.

Netanyahu thanked also the French President for hosting him in this tragic anniversary and stressed the deep and old friendship between the French and Israeli states. Macron pledged to fight such hatred and called for a thorough investigation into the recent killing of a Parisian woman that was believed to be linked to anti-Jewish sentiment. "The zealots of militant Islam, who seek to destroy you, seek to destroy us as well".

De Villiers, whose mandate as the military chief of staff was extended by a year on Wednesday by the new defense minister, criticized at a parliamentary committee hearing on the same day the 850-million-euro ($975 million) cut in this year's budget. His last official visit to France was to attend the unity march following the attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, police officers, and a kosher supermarket in January 2015.

French expert on the Palestinian cause Jean-Paul Chagnollaud said that "France's stance is still somewhat vague on the matter".

"We will never surrender to the messages of hate", he said.

In London, the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Jonathan Arkush, recently condemned the decision of the Israeli government not to implement a plan to expand separate spaces for mixed prayer at the Western Wall.

Moving to contemporary times, Macron stated that anti-Zionism is a modern version of anti-Semitism.

Pro-Palestinian and other activists protested against Mr Netanyahu's appearance, criticising Jewish settlement policy and the blockade of Gaza.
