Udta Punjab wins big at IIFA awards

Udta Punjab, a gritty crime drama spotlighting the huge problem of drug abuse among young people in Punjab, scooped up the Best Actor award for Shahid Kapoor and the Best Actress prize for Alia Bhatt.

Actor Diljit Dosanjh also won the Best Debutant (male) award for the same film. She played the role of a Bihari migrant girl in the movie.

Except this Bollywood on-screen character Saif Ali Khan and film maker executive Karan Johar hosted the event.

The Best Picture honour went to Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja, based on the real life story of Neerja Bhanot, an air hostess who lost her life while trying to save others on a hijacked flight at Karachi.

Every possible Bollywood actor and actress was in NY to attend the IIFA Awards.

Music director AR Rahman was given a special award for completing 25 years in the music industry.

Alia's co-star from Udta Punjab, Shahid Kapoor too won big in IIFA 2017.

The Best Performance in a Negative Role title went to Jim Sarbh for Neerja. Alia, who also won the Myntra Style Icon Award, began the proceedings of the night with her performance on "Tamma tamma", "Ladki beautiful" and "Badri ki dulhaniya".

The music category saw Pritam winning the Best Music Direction for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Amitabh Bhattacharya bagging the Best Lyrics accolade for Channa mereya.

Shabani Azmi's performance in Neerja and Anupam Kher's work in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story earned them the Best Supporting Actor awards. Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon wooed the audience with their crackling chemistry as they jived to retro tracks.

Well, what happened was that Katrina Kaif was present at the stage and among the audience at the same time.
