The deal is part of Apple's embrace of education that dates back to the days of getting the Apple II in education labs. For instance, buying a Mac will score you the Solo3s, while buying an iPad Pro can get you BeatsXs. The promotion is essentially the same as last year's with one notable exception: The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are excluded.

Regardless of if you go Mac or iPad, both lineups are eligible for the free Beats phones, which include either the Beats Solo3, Powerbeats 3, or BeatsX. If you purchase an iPad Pro you're offered the BeatsX earphones free but you'll have to pay $50 to upgrade to the Powerbeats3 and $150 to upgrade to the Solo3.

Apple has today officially launched their 2017 Back to School promotion in the United States and Canada, offering eligible customers a free pair of Beats with qualifying iPad Pro and Mac purchases. As always, the deal applies to K-12 teachers and administers, higher education faculty and staff, college students, and parents purchasing on behalf on their university-bounds kids.

Apple is offering a slight discount on regular MacBook pricing during the sale. Apple's been selling the MacBook Pro solidly ever since it was released past year, so it probably assumes quite rightly that it doesn't need a big sale to push college students to upgrade.
