Mexico finds scoring form, beats El Salvador in entertaining Gold Cup match

Mexico national team soccer coach Juan Carlos Osorio was suspended six matches by FIFA

The level of talent on El Salvador is miles away from what Mexico has to offer but the game could still be an interesting one in San Diego this Sunday.

It was a bright start for El Tri, as they got on the front foot quickly and were rewarded with an early goal.

This was an individual performance of some notes from Leon winger Elias Hernandez.

Mexico's next opponent in Group C will be Jamaica, the team it beat for the title in 2015, at Sports Authority Field in Denver on July 13.

But Mexico were the more clinical finishers in this contest and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute on a sensational Hernandez volley, from an accurate cross by Jesus Gallardo.

Shifted out to the right after the break, Hernandez broke through 10 minutes into the second half and put in a risky cross for Orbelin Pineda to tap in.

Meanwhile, this was a spirited display by El Salvador.

Federation Internationale de Football Association on Friday suspended Juan Carlos Osorio for six games following an ugly incident in the third-place game of the Confederations Cup last weekend in Russia, where the 54-year-old Colombian coach spewed expletives at an official and bumped him while protesting a non-call late in extra time.

Once the third goal was scored, the match ended up being a training session, where Mexico worked on possession and movement of the ball.

The defending champions claimed their seventh Gold Cup crown in 2015 and they took a step towards another trophy thanks to first global goals from Hedgardo Marin and Orbelin Pineda, and Elias Hernandez's effort, in San Diego on Sunday. In the second half, El Salvador's opportunities on goal were restricted to efforts from longer range or set pieces, while Mexico's more solid base seemed to give the forward players more confidence. It was the first goal from open play by El Salvador against Mexico in eight years.

Against better sides, the steel of Molina will surely be used, while Pineda showed with his goal and all-round game that he can be one of the stars of this Gold Cup if Osorio gives him more minutes.
