Trump, Modi seek rapport despite friction on trade, immigration

US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered praise on the state of bilateral relations at the White House on Monday, in the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the world's two largest democracies.

In an article for the Wall Street Journal ahead of their meeting, Mr Modi said India and the United States were "mutually reinforcing engines of growth and innovation".

"The relationship between the United States and India is very, very strong and very, very powerful", Trump said.

He said India and the United States are strong partners in the fight against terrorism.

"The other issue was the military part and it was broadly and extensively discussed along with Pakistan".

Although Modi's two-day Washington visit, which began Sunday, is lower-key than his previous three trips to the USA since he took office in 2014, it has included plenty of face-time with Trump.

US President Donald Trump yesterday thanked India for its developmental programmes in Afghanistan, saying instability in the war-torn country is a common area of concern for the two nations.

This was Modi's first visit to the White House since Trump's inauguration in January.

The State Department also announced that it was slapping sanctions on a senior figure in the Kashmiri group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

He later tweeted: "Interacted with top CEOs". Such investments can circumvent visa restrictions, create jobs in India and even balance trade between the two nations.

"The relationship between India and the United States has never been stronger, never been better", Trump said alongside Modi in the Rose Garden in front of top U.S. and Indian officials and the media.

In coming years, Indian companies will import energy in excess of US$40 billion from the USA, and more than 200 American-made aircraft will join the private Indian aviation fleet. On his welcome, Modi said that it is an honor for all 125 billion Indians to be welcomed by The President and the First Lady. During the talks, both leaders emphasised the importance of a strong India-US relationship.

"I m sure that. your vast and successful experience in the business world will lend an aggressive and bold agenda to our relations".
