Kevin Harvick wins at Sonona for 1st victory of season

On Sunday he earned his first Monster Energy Cup series victory at Sonoma Raceway in California's wine country.

With this race win, Kevin Harvick is now in third place in the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup standings. For NASCAR, you've got cars that can make and take a little contact and these cars on the road courses are better than we could have imagined several years ago. We're 10 races from the cutoff race at Richmond, and look at the names that haven't won a race yet: Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano (whose only win was encumbered, which is NASCAR-ese for doesn't count toward the playoffs) and Matt Kenseth.

At Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Scott Dixon won the IndyCar race at Road America to spoil the Team Penske party on the rural road course. "He had a great auto, and once he fell out, I felt like we were 100 percent in control of the race, no matter what had happened, whether it was old tires or new tires". Johnson has no Cup experience, but is a sports vehicle racer. It was the first stage win for a man who has three race wins this year.

"We try to put ourselves in a position to win", he said. "But after everything happened, to get second is really good". Erik Jones finished in 25th place. "To come to Sonoma for so many years, and to win yesterday coming back to the K&N Series, and come back here today..." In doing so, the Furniture Row Racing driver pocketed yet another playoff point.

So Harvick chose to run the regional K&N Pro Series West race Saturday at Sonoma, winning that event.

Martin Truex Jr. looked like the only racer who might stand in Harvick's way.

Earnhardt Jr.is third on the all-time wins list with 17 victories at Daytona International Speedway including two DAYTONA 500 victories (2004, 2014) and two Coke Zero 400s (2001, 2015).

You have to be something of a NASCAR fan to understand all of that, maybe, and not all NASCAR fans have a firm grasp on the system. Kyle Busch is the only Sonoma multi-race victor among active drivers with two wins at the track, most recently in 2015. Clint Bowyer's position is more precarious, as he'd be the last driver in on points if the season ended right now, but he's run well enough to figure he's got a real shot.

"The speed was there especially at the end of the race".

A seven-time victor past year in the Truck Series, Byron, broke through just a week after an agonizingly close loss to Denny Hamlin at MI. "I mean, sitting there running second on seven cylinders and stayed right with the leader".

What makes Day's story so compelling is that until 2011, all forms of motorsports competition were banned in Israel, including outdoor go-cart racing. And it didn't hurt that NASCAR officials reined in their trigger finger on the caution light and didn't flip it for debris or spinning cars over the final 10 laps until a hard hit by Kasey Kahne on the final circuit around the 1.99-mile road course. Runner-up Valteri Bottas, in the second Mercedes vehicle, was left a lap down after a collision with another auto on the first lap forced him to the pits for repairs.

The Australian secured his fifth career win, while Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas overtook 18-year-old Canadian Lance Stroll's Williams in the closing meters to take second place. Stroll, at eighteen years and 237 days, is the youngest rookie in F1 history to get a podium finish and the first Canadian to get one since Jacques Villeneuve in 2001.

Vettel steered his Ferrari into fourth, just ahead of Hamilton's Mercedes. Vettel accused Hamilton of "check braking" him on a restart, causing Vettel to run into the back of Hamilton's then-leading vehicle.

Vettel was given a 10-second stop-go penalty, but Hamilton lost valuable time changing a loose headrest at the same time that Vettel served his time penalty. Hamilton later had to pit because his headrest came loose.

On the brink of the playoffs, Bowyer isn't thinking that he can rely on getting in on points.

At 14, he began competing in Europe, aiming to become a Formula One driver. The next race is the Austrian GP on July 9.
