Hackers strike across Europe, sparking widespread disruption

In a post published Wednesday, The Shadow Brokers made new threats, announced a new money-making scheme and made a boastful reference to the recent chaos.

The attack came as computer servers across Europe and in India were hit by a major ransomware attack.

It named it ExPetr, noting that "while it has several strings similar to Petya, it possesses entirely different functionality". Other organisations have also been affected. "It's somewhat contained to the organizations that were connected to each other", he said.

On Tuesday, APM terminals in New Jersey and Los Angeles had been closed.

"The hacking attack could have led to serious consequences but neither the oil production nor the processing has been affected thanks to the fact that the company has switched to a reserve control system", the company said.

"We're aware of the global ransomware incident and are monitoring the situation closely", a spokesperson told The Independent, advising members of the public and businesses to check its website for guidance on keeping their systems secure. A Microsoft spokeswoman on Tuesday said that the company was investigating the outbreak.

The government today said it has initiated proactive measures and is keeping a close vigil on the ransomware attack. Protecting the database from attack was among the program's considerations, Sanfield said.

The second-largest drugmaker in the United States is confirming it's been affected by a cyberattack.

Russian Federation has denied involvement and the orchestrators of Tuesday's attack were not known, although onlookers estimated they could make billions of dollars from the hack.

"Even post WannaCry attack, with our experience we can say that over 50 per cent of Windows systems are still not patched across India. The aggregate impact on our business is being assessed", Maersk said. The company is one of China's biggest software suppliers. He says that if one computer gets infected, the new malware has a backup mechanism to spread to patched computers within the network as well. It gave no other details.

It appeared the attack involved ransomware in which the perpetrators may demand money to restore victim operations. Multinationals, including the global law firm DLA Piper and Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk, were also affected. There has been a partial impact at APM Terminals (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd). Sirkar said that no containers could be loaded or unloaded at the terminal Wednesday.

"Companies are just not doing what they are supposed to do to fix the problem".

He added that any response would take time to implement given the large volume of traffic handled by the port.

Norway's national security agency said the ransomware was affecting an unnamed "international company" in the country. But Tehan said "all indications would point to" it being the same virus.

A new and highly virulent outbreak of malicious data-scrambling software appears to be causing mass disruption across Europe, hitting Ukraine especially hard.

It demanded $300 in Bitcoin.
