FBI: Gunman Acted Alone In Shooting Of Congressman

U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman, who turned out to be an unemployed home inspector with a deep animus toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans.

"He fired nearly 60 shots, but we do not know his intentions on potential target", said Tim Slater, FBI agent in charge. They said he acted alone and had no connections to terror groups.

"I think he was struggling in a lot of aspects of his life", Slater said.

At this point in the investigation, the attack appears to be "more spontaneous" than planned, Slater said.

A review of Hodgkinson's laptop, cellphone and camera, which yielded photographs of the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, Dirksen Senate Office Building and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, appeared to reflect the timeline of a typical tourist - not a man plotting mass murder. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and had earlier emailed the offices of senators from IL.

Slater can't explain how Hodgkinson knew Republicans were practicing for the congressional baseball game where he had been sleeping in his vehicle.

Sue Hodgkinson, the wife of the gunman James Hodgkinson, said last week that her husband sold everything he owned from his home inspection business earlier this year before traveling to the Washington area.

The FBI says it found police calls to Hodgkinson's Belleville home over complaints of his holding target practice in his backyard, and a 2006 domestic battery charge. Hodgkinson's posts did not include "threats or references to Members of Congress or the Congressional baseball game". Others described him as odd or a "sourpuss". Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican. "The morning of the shooting, a witness reported Hodgkinson asking them, 'Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?' When the witness responded that it was a Republican event, Hodgkinson reportedly remained at the baseball field".

Hodgkinson, who was from IL but was living in Virginia at the time of the shooting, launched his attack carrying two weapons, a 7.62mm SKS rifle and a 9mm handgun, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI also said Hodgkinson purchased the two guns he used in the attack legally, through federal firearms licenses.

The FBI also said Hodgkinson had been renting a storage unit in the area since April 16.

The day of the shooting, he went to the unit at 6:23 a.m. and left at 6:35 a.m. "I about fell out of my chair", Watson said, adding that authorities began to search their files for records of contacts with the shooter. Officials said they also searched the van Hodgkinson had been living out of, which was in the parking lot of the YMCA.

Since the shooting, law enforcement has been investigating what motivated Hodgkinson of Belleville, who died after a shootout with officers.

On June 12th, he texted a relative about a desire to return home to southern IL.

Authorities haven't determined Hodgkinson's motive for the attack at the practice for an annual charity baseball game, Slater said. Scalise struck in the hip, resulting in severe damage to blood vessels and internal organs.

Congressman Scalise has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized, but he continues to improve. His physicians have indicated extensive hospital treatment will be necessary, followed by a period of rehabilitation.
