Wall scores playoff-best 32 as Wizards beat Hawks in Game 1

Washington Wizards forward Markieff Morris left dunks the ball while Atlanta Hawks forward Kent Bazemore right watches during the first half in Game 1 of a first-round NBA basketball playoff series in Washington Sunday

Now he's promising to dish it back. Point guard Dennis Schroder finished with 25 points in Game 1, but was dominated by John Wall and it's hard to foresee an instance where Wall loses that matchup.

Morris, in his first taste of the postseason after 448 regular-season games, caught fire early in the second half to push Washington ahead, and the Wizards held on to take the series lead.

The Washington Wizards take a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Atlanta Hawks after a 109-101 home win. He has a brewing feud with Paul Millsap, who said the Wizards were "playing MMA" during Game 1, and the refs were definitely quicker to call fouls tonight. Millsap offered choice words about Washington's defense after the game.

Both the Hawks and Wizards are talented teams with skilled players up and down the roster.

"I just want to reiterate that it's a long series", Millsap said, according to the Journal-Constitution. He doesn't plan to ease up on Millsap any time soon.

The Washington Wizards can take full control of this series by winning here and going up 3-0.

All that scrambling inside could create more tension like Sunday's altercation. Millsap averaged 10 points, 1.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds in the two losses he participated in and he did not play against Washington in their fourth meeting.

"The game ratchets up when you get into the playoffs", Durant said. "It's all love of the game".

The Wizards glared. They talked trash. Bearing any injuries, it's a pretty safe assumption the Wizards won't be changing their starting lineup throughout these playoffs, but the Hawks have used a few different starting lineups throughout the season and they may choose to change up their rotation a bit in Game 2.

"I think it was just pride for us", Porter said.

"I was just hoping that he would stick the landing".

Washington earned the Game 1 victory, but Atlanta shot themselves in the foot for the majority of the 48 minutes. Some of that is self-inflicted, but Morris also presents a matchup nightmare that Wall knew was possible when the Wizards traded a first-round pick for the power forward at the 2016 trade deadline.

"We need him to be the scorer for us", Wall said. "We didn't have to double team in the post anymore".

The Warriors, aiming to get back to the NBA Finals for a third straight year and regain the crown they surrendered last season to the Cleveland Cavaliers, beat the Trail Blazers four times in the regular season.

Russell Westbrook (51/10/13) did everything he could to keep the Thunder in contention to win the game, but his teammates couldn't give him any help.
