Trump to attend ASEAN, APEC Summits this year

On Wednesday Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr, the summit's director-general for operations, told reporters, "As of now, President Trump, for instance, when President Duterte called him up to congratulate him, had already indicated that he is coming in November".

In early December, Duterte phoned Trump to congratulate the latter on his election victory.

At least 52 meetings, including an annual gathering of ASEAN foreign ministers on central Boracay Island in February, have been held without any incident, Cuy said.

"When I spoke to President Trump this morning, he gave me the great privilege to inform the secretary-general and the permanent [representatives] of ASEAN that the US president will attend the US-ASEAN Summit, the East Asia Summit and the APEC Leaders Meeting in Vietnam and the Philippines this November", Pence said. The Philippine Star reported that some 4,000 people are expected to attend the event, though Tiotuico said he wasn't sure whether Chinese President Xi Jinping would come. "But he seems to be very busy", he said, adding, "If he's coming, it would be good for the country, for all of us".

Robespierre Bolivar told a news conference that Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo will go to the United States in early May to attend the meeting between the ASEAN FMs and the USA state secretary.

The US is one of the dialogue partners of ASEAN along with China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Australia and South Korea.

"Multilateral meetings of this sort, we usually expect 100% attendance. Numerous leaders who do not attend do so because of internal issues", although "one or two" leaders may not be able to attend.

Sultan Bolkiah's visit and bilateral meeting will take place on April 27 while President Widodo's state visit and meeting with Duterte is set on April 28.

Duterte is expected to have a tight schedule as the Philippines hosts the ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings on April 26 to 29.

After the ASEAN meeting, Duterte and Widodo will fly to Davao to witness the launch of the Davao-Gensan-Bitung Roro route on April 30.
