China remains silent over North Korea's 'failed' missile test

China and Russia send spy vessels to follow US naval group headed to North Korea

Last week, amid tensions with North Korea and the possibility that the North might conduct a nuclear or missile test, USA officials, including the president, had suggested that the U.S.S. Carl Vinson was headed north, toward the Korean peninsula.

But although the USS Vinson carrier group headed into the South China Sea, it didn't continue north towards the Korean Peninsula.

It wasn't immediately clear if the mix-up was due to a deliberate attempt to psych out North Korea's leaders - or a false narrative that resulted from miscommunications up the chain of command.

The US military initially said in a statement, dated April 10, that Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of Pacific Command, directed the Carl Vinson strike group "to sail north and report on station in the Western Pacific".

The deployment has angered North Korea, which has called the move an effort to increase tensions in the region.

President Trump stated last week that a "very powerful" armada paired with submarines was being sent as a deterrent to North Korea's nuclear belligerence. "That's a fact, it happened", Spicer said. Photos released by the Navy showed instead that on Saturday it was in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java and then the Indian Ocean. The confusion was caused by miscommunications between the White House and the Defense Department, the New York Times reported Tuesday. He visited South Korea earlier and will head to Indonesia after his stop in Japan. And we're doing exactly what we said.

"I actually have to give credit to the White House because you have a China that is more engaged than ever before in North Korea", he said.

The narrative last week was that the USA and its allies in the western Pacific were gearing up for a showdown with strongman Kim Jong Un ahead of the anniversary of the birth of his grandfather, the late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.

Multiple US defense officials told CNN that Mattis had inadvertently misspoke and that it was a port visit in Australia that was canceled to allow for the group's redeployment to the waters near the Korean Peninsula. He says the Trump administration's plans to simplify the USA tax code and cut the corporate tax rate will "benefit every business represented here today".
