RK Nagar polls: OPS faction uses Jayalalithaa's coffin replica as campaign prop

Sasikala can't use AIADMK's 'Two leaves' poll symbol on website social media accounts Election Commission

Chennai: The V.K. Sasikala faction of the AIADMK, which is in power, has been accused by opposition parties for widespread bribing of voters in R.K.Nagar constituency where bye election is due on April 12.

O. Panneerselvam-led AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) faction has also filed complaints against the Dinakaran's camp.

"The two leaves symbol was already there in the website".

Former minister and leader of former chief minister O.Panneerselvam faction K.P.Munusamy came out with a wild allegation that Dinakaran has spent over Rs 100 crore for bribing voters in the constituency.

Dinakaran, who has opted for the "hat" symbol for the bypoll, said there was no need for him to seek votes in the name of two leaves.

The bypoll assumes significance in the backdrop of a vertical split in the ruling AIADMK, with supporters divided between its jailed interim General Secretary V K Sasikala and expelled leader Panneerselvam.

Stressing on an independent judicial inquiry to go into the circumstances surrounding Jayalalithaa's death, campaigners urged the voters to cast their votes for "electric pole" symbol to strengthen the demand. Reiterating that the case has been filed at the instance of Dhinakaran in order to defame Panneerselvam, the petitioners said they were not at the place on April 6, as mentioned in the first information report. Both factions laid claim to the political legacy of the former Chief Minister, who had been elevated to an iconic position in the state following the numerous social schemes introduced by her government. One of the officials, Marudhu Alaguraj, further asked, "If money alone is the only criteria to win the elections, why should we campaign hard?"
