The Galaxy S8's voice assistant won't support voice commands at launch

Samsung previously described Bixby as "a new way to interact with your phone", and "fundamentally different from other voice agents or assistants in the market".

As reported by Ars Technica, the new Samsung Galaxy S8 features offered a number of impressive upgrades of which the Samsung Bixby was a part. While several features will work on worldwide versions, those that rely on voice activation and control won't operate, because Samsung apparently hasn't perfected Bixby's understanding of English yet.

According to Samsung's official statement, Bixby voice search functionality is not yet active on the handset and will not go live until "later this spring". The Journal said Samsung executives were still discussing on when to make Bixby available in English.

This puts it a month at least past the Galaxy S8's release, which will leave the phone without one of its main features, and little use for the dedicated hardware button on the side of the device.

The Galaxy S8 users will have to wait till "later this spring" to interact with Bixby.

Sriram Thodla, senior director of services and new business at Samsung, speaks about the new voice agent named "Bixby" that is featured on the new Samsung Galaxy S8 during a launch event, March 29, 2017, in New York City.

Bixby was one of the flagship new differentiators for the Galaxy S8.

The company did not give an explanation for the delay. The company's latest front runner that is expected to launch April 21 worldwide will not incorporate the Samsung's hallmark feature for the USA customers.

Bixby is expected to become more and more capable in the coming months and years as more and more apps feature voice activation.

"Anything you can do with touch, you can do with voice", Samsung representatives summed-up the feature.

Existing AI tools like Siri, Cortana, Alexa, and Google Assistant can't perform such actions, a key differentiator for Bixby.
