NBA Players Pick Russell Westbrook For 2017 MVP After 42nd Triple-Double

In any other season, he would be a triple-double marvel, recording his 21st of the season with 35 points, 11 rebounds and 15 assists in a 135-128 win over the Kings on Sunday night.

- Westbrook scored 57 points while setting a triple-double in a win over the Orlando Magic in March. He hit a 36-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to give Oklahoma City the win.

But with his 10th assist and the triple-double locked down, Westbrook went to work on the Nuggets' 10-point lead.

Russell Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson's 56-year-old record with his 42nd triple-double of the season Sunday, then broke the Denver Nuggets' hearts with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for a 106-105 victory.

Westbrook finished the day with 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

- Westbrook has averaged 31.9 points per game, over a point more than Robertson did in 61-62, when he put up 30.8 per match.

"If he stays healthy, there's no reason he couldn't eventually break my career record of 181 triple-double games". But now Westbrook holds the season record.

As someone who did the unthinkable 55 years before Westbrook, Robertson's assessment is hard to refute.

- After Westbrook, the next three players on the list for most triple-doubles this season are James Harden (21), LeBron James (13) and Nikola Jokic (6). Westbrook's victor from about 36 feet cam after Nikola Jokic missed a runner on the other end that would have put the game out of reach.

"I practice that shot everyday pregame", he said. He has long silenced any doubt the Thunder would still be competitive in the Western Conference after Kevin Durant's departure to the Golden State Warriors.

Westbrook received a standing ovation from the opposing crowd amid cheers of 'MVP'. And how has his individual greatness affected his Oklahoma City Thunder team? "I continue to think "why not" and continue to strive to be the best I can be".

"Pure adrenaline, emotions running high, game-winning shot, it is something you dream about as a little kid to be able to do that on the road, especially from that distance", Westbrook said.
