Donald Trump's wealth shrunk by $1 billion over the past year, according to an annual tally by Forbes magazine.

The number of U.S. billionaires on the list was 565, which Forbes attributed to the recent stock market surge since Mr Trump's November 2016 election. Bezos' net worth surged by $27.6 billion to $72.8 billion, lofting him to third place among the world's richest.

Forbes said that much of the decline in Trump's net worth is due to softness in the midtown Manhattan real estate market. For the second year running France's Liliane Bettencourt, the L'Oreal cosmetics heiress, was the world's wealthiest woman with a $39.5bn net worth.

Ortega's fortune was up $4.3 billion since previous year, but he still fell to fourth in the world, unable to keep up with the outsize gains of others.
