Kim Jong Un says new rocket test a success

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un watches a nuclear explosion

It quoted him as saying the test "declared a new birth of the Juche-based rocket industry".

The report marks the latest challenge to the United States from Kim's defiant regime.

After personally overseeing the test, Mr Kim "emphasized that the world will soon witness the great significance of the epoch-making victory we achieved today", KCNA reported, adding that it marked the birth of the country's rocket industry.

It said North Korea had installed the environmental shelter in late 2015 to hide detection of test preparations.

Addressing the issue, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Thursday in Japan that USA policies to stop North Korea's nuclear program have "failed".

Despite global pressure, North Korea has been largely successful in developing and advancing its nuclear program.

The regime in Pyongyang has repeated threatened to hit the U.S. mainland and bases in Japan with long-range missiles.

North Korean news agencies described the high-thrust rocket engine trial as "revolutionary" and stated that it was carried out at the Sohae launch site.

The test occurred as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was due to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The KCNA said he was accompanied by Ri Pyong-chol, Kim Jong-sik and other leading officials of the North's ruling Workers' Party of Korea, and scientists and technicians in the field of rocket research. "We hope all parties, including our friends from the United States, could size up the situation in a cool-headed and comprehensive fashion and arrive at a wise decision".

Tillerson said of the USA and China, "we will work together to see if we can not bring the government in Pyongyang to a place where they want to make a different course - make a course correction and move away from their development of their nuclear weapons".

"I don't deny we are targeting new individuals including North Korean nationals involved in this murder and we will use all legal channels to apprehend them".

Kim has said he's close to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching North America.

"Juche" or self-reliance is the official state ideology of North Korea, described by the government as "original, brilliant and revolutionary contribution to national and worldwide thought".

The half-brother of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un was poisoned with the lethal nerve agent VX in a brazen Cold War-style assassination on February 13 in Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

In an interview published on Saturday, Mr Tillerson called the North Korea threat "imminent".

"When I hear all options are on the table, look, we have a sworn duty to defend our ally in South Korea", Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said during an Atlantic Council event in Washington.
