Shaw one of five Reds in England squad

Gareth Southgate

The 34-year-old, a pivotal figure for Premier League relegation battlers Sunderland, has not made any worldwide appearances since November 2013 but will hope to add to his haul of 55 senior caps next week as the Three Lions head to Dortmund for a friendly meeting with Germany before hosting Group F rivals Lithuania in a 2018 World Cup qualifying tie at Wembley.

Southgate pointed to a lack of playing time with Manchester United as a key reason behind the 31-year-old's omission.

Despite this, Spurs and United are still two of the biggest providers of players for this England squad.

"Part of the development over the next few years is exposing these younger players to the pressure games to see how they deal with it".

With no Rooney or Jordan Henderson available, Southgate also confirmed he is yet to decide who will skipper his team for the friendly with Germany and World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. Ross Barkley has been playing very well for his club. He's a player we have a lot of belief in. "Wayne totally understands that".

Southgate is also apparently anxious about the match fitness of Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck.

Meeting up with the squad and seeing all the boys.

Wednesday's match against Germany will be Southgate's first since getting the England job on a permanent basis.

"We had a good chat", said Defoe.

"He has become more of a complete player, more efficient", the Frenchman said when asked about Walcott's development.

"He's a player I still like".

"I said, "It's been a long time, I remember you kicking me years ago", but generally, he's a really nice man, to be fair".

Scrapping days off after Rooney's 5am booze session at the team hotel last November and Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana going to a Bournemouth lap-dancing club. Whatever we think we are as a nation, we've not been delivering.
