Latavius Murray Signs with the Vikings

In a long Instragram post, Murray said "there wasn't a thought in my mind" about attempting to wear Peterson's number while he's in Minnesota, because of the respect for what Peterson has done and what he means to the Vikings. Murray was one of the top running backs available in free agency, showing a unique blend of experience, youth, and ability that made the Vikings pull the trigger on the deal.

"Adrian is probably going to go down as one of the greatest Minnesota Vikings in team history", Spielman said during the conference call. The Vikings declined their $18 million option on his contract for 2017 to make him a free agent.

He previously visited with the Seattle Seahawks, but the team later signed running back Eddie Lacy. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2015 after rushing for 1,066 yards and six touchdowns.

There were 88 running backs to notch at least 30 rushing attempts a year ago.

The Vikings hosted Murray at team headquarters on Wednesday and struck the deal early Thursday, announcing it at 12:47 a.m.

Peterson is still a free agent, and a reunion with the Vikings has always been considered a possibility for the running back.

"I want to say to Vikings fans: I'm not here to replace #28, he's irreplaceable", Murray wrote. That, of course, was Peterson's number in Minnesota.

In theory, sure. The Lions are believed to be in the market for another running back, and the bruising Peterson would be a nice complement to Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.

Peterson is the leading rusher in Vikings history and ranks 16th in National Football League history with 11,747 yards in 10 seasons. The Packers don't typically go for aging free agents, but when they do, it has a Canton-like flair.
