Andy Puzder withdraws as Labor secretary nominee

Puzder took himself out of contention for the secretary job a day before his scheduled confirmation hearing in the Senate.

In a preview of Wednesday's episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert reflects on the straw that broke the camel's back for Puzder - and the powerful figure behind it all. He is the first of President Donald Trump's nominees to not make it through the confirmation process.

The top Democrat on the HELP committee, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, tweeted his reaction.

"Today's nomination demonstrates that diversity does not come at the expense of highly skilled and experienced candidates for his presidential Cabinet", Pedro J. Torres-Diaz, president of the Hispanic National Bar Association, said in a written statement. "I've wished him the best, we just spoke".

Since 2009, Alexander has been the dean of Florida International University College of Law.

Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME, who was on the Senate commitee considering Puzder's nomination, told reporters on Monday that she was evaluating the domestic violence accusation.

The main sources of criticism were believed to be allegations from Puzder's messy divorce, his hiring of an undocumented worker in his home, his support for increased automation and his company's racy advertisements.
