What We Do In Shadows TV Spinoff in the Works

Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement

A spin off of the critically acclaimed New Zealand vampire mockumentary, What We Do In The Shadow, and Māori sketch comedy, Only In Aotearoa, are expected to make their way to New Zealand screens next year.

The pair have dreamed up Paranormal Response Unit, a TV show based on their hit vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows.

"We've pitched a show for those two cops in New Zealand and we've made a mini-pilot", Clement told The A.V. Club.

For now the show will only be airing in New Zealand on TVNZ 2, but given the popularity of What We Do in the Shadows it surely won't be long before it's shown in worldwide territories. The six episode series will have a budget of $1.4 million and will air on TVNZ 2.

That has changed now, as New Zealand On Air has officially announced that funding has been secured for Paranormal Event Response Unit.

Waititi revealed that We're Wolves will concern a power battle between lycanthropes played by What We Do in the Shadows stars Rhys Darby and Stuart Rutherford.

NZOA chief executive Jane Wrightson said comedy was a serious business and "notoriously hard to get right". "We are delighted that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are bringing their talents to smaller screens".

The agency will also stump up $240,000 for eight episodes of Only In Aotearoa to screen on Māori Television.

Based on a web series of the same name, its sketches focus on the Māori perspective and finds the lols in "what young people could be anxious about on a very bad day".

New seasons of 7 Days and Jono and Ben have also been funded by NZOA for next year.
