Kuchar speculates Tiger could be final Ryder Cup pick

Love announced the picks Monday, and a final pick will be made after the Tour Championship on September 25 to finalize the 12-man US team for the September 30-Oct.

Holmes finished 10th in the Ryder Cup standings and is one of the few active Americans to have never lost in the event.

The trio will join Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson, who all qualified automatically.

Love said the final pick will not necessarily come down to who plays the best at the Tour Championship.

"There were questions as late as last night but we kept coming back to these three", Love told a press conference. If they go in there believing they have the best team, they are going to play well. "It was a very tough decision".

In the past four Ryder Cups, the U.S. lost three times yet have scored 45 total points and the Europeans' 47.

"We have a long two weeks ahead of us for the final pick", said Love. We're really confident in them. We talked about a lot of great players. I am excited we have 11 players now.

That's not to say Watson won't be at Hazeltine, an expansive ballpark cut into in farmland outside of Minneapolis that would suit his grip-it-and-rip-it philosophy, in two weeks.

It might sound unusual but I think that Rickie Fowler's failure to reach the final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs may just have clinched his place as one of United States of America captain Davis Love III's Ryder Cup wild cards.

Captain Davis Love III went with a trio of veterans with his first three picks, and that allows him a bit of leeway for his final selection.

Rory McIlroy dropped out of the top five of the standings after a quiet week at the BMW, but I like his chances at the Tour Championship and having a week off will definitely help him.

Or, maybe Kuchar was just trying to build some drama into the seemingly never-ending process of fielding a US team that, once again, will hope to use revenge as motivation to end the European stranglehold on the cup. It's not team golf on his mind at present, however, but a first victory since claiming the Malaysian Open in April, 2014.

So far, Team USA's roster has matched up neatly with an algorithmic Ryder Cup ranking system that gives players points based on how much money they've won over the past two years. "We found no weaknesses in his game".

"He's such a great teammate", Love said. The same unflinching attitude that allowed him to transition seamlessly from college to the professional game will also steel his nerves on one of the biggest stages in golf. He plays well all over the world. "He plays well all over the world; he travels well, brings a lot of intangibles to our team".

Kuchar, 38, won bronze in the Rio Olympics and is competing in his fourth Ryder Cup.

Thomas Pieters, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer were selected as picks by European captain Darren Clarke last month, the inclusion of the Belgian taking the number of rookies in the defending champions' team to six. He was 11 shots behind victor Dustin Johnson, who had already qualified for the Ryder Cup team.
