Jacob Eason getting prepared — Georgia practice report

Not having a set quarterback is not in Georgia's best interest. Senior Greyson Lambert started the opener against then No. 22 North Carolina while Eason got the nod against Nicholls last Saturday.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Monday and Tuesday that the practice week would determine who earned the start against Missouri.

One concern for Georgia would be how Eason handles his first true road environment at Missouri.

"We've gotta get through today's practice and look at some things", Smart said on the SEC coaches teleconference.

Eason, one of the top recruits in the nation, got the start last week and generated a few big plays, but also had issues with accuracy and made a few mistakes. "We'll try to make a decision from there (on the starting quarterback), but we're not ready to do anything right now".

"Jacob made some mistakes, but he also made some really good plays", Smart said.

That said, Georgia's coaches - and fans - have to hope this is just the game the Bulldogs needed to get focused for a tough stretch coming up. "But within every game we've got a situation where another quarterback has to be ready. We just want to get the best guy out there that gives us the best opportunity to win based on that game plan".

"Both (Eason and Lambert) are skilled quarterbacks that present problems for us defensively", Odom said. The Georgia defense is allowing 24 points and 275.5 yards per game with two interceptions, one fumble recovery, and three sacks. He converted a third down pass to Michael Chigbu to keep the clock running late. He had some really good plays, too. "That comes from great leadership, and we have to get better leadership". "So, I was very proud of how he managed the situation that he was brought into".

-QB Jacob Eason made his first collegiate start against Nicholls, completing 11 of 20 passes for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception. "But so did Greyson, so there we lay". However, Lambert replaced Eason a series after the freshman threw a pass that was tipped and intercepted by Nicholls State's Jeff Hall at the goal line and returned 91 yards. Standing uncovered in the back of the end zone was Blazevich.

Blazevich smiled Monday when asked about the play. "It's all good. Once again that's why we have another game and another practice".

"I think, obviously, both are skilled quarterbacks", Odom said. "That's what we were talking about yesterday".

Georgia scored two quick-strike touchdowns - one on offense, one on defense - in a span of about two minutes after Nicholls took a third-quarter lead, and the No. 9 Bulldogs escaped with an uninspiring 26-24 win over the Colonels on Saturday. "I think he can command in the huddle and he just knows exactly where everybody's supposed to be". "He's been in that spot numerous times, so he's used to it, he's comfortable with it".

Smart said he didn't think taking Eason out in those situations will dash Eason's confidence. Smart said no quarterback will publicly speak until the quarterback battle is finalized. "I think Jacob is very confident in himself, that's not something that he lacks".

- Freshman wide receiver Riley Ridley has missed the last two days of practice and showed up on Wednesday with a cast on his right hand. The number grew when the school added Joe Dupree in 1990 against Georgia Tech to the list.

Eason has passed for 335 yards in two games. If so, that's a decision Smart is most certainly fine with. "For now, we're not going to put those guys out there". "You've gotta be aware of who's in the game, because they can do some of the same things and have success doing it". "That'll work itself out over the course of the week".
