Ronaldo cannot wait for 'special' Sporting match

Ronaldo's footballing education had begun at Sporting, having joined the club's academy as a child, though he spent only one season in the first team before signing for Manchester United in 2003. "I wanted to draw Sporting again, because I think they have a good team, they have a good coach, and it will be another special moment in my life", he told uefa.com.

Carvalho wants to see Ronaldo in a Sporting kit again before he decides to hang up his boots.

However, just as when he silenced the Jose Alvalade nine years ago, he promised to not go easy on his compatriots. "If I was the president of Real Madrid and I had a player like me, I would renew him for 10 years at least", added Ronaldo.

"If we're taking part in a game it is to win".

He is now the Champions League all-time top scorer on 94 goals, and he has lifted the European Cup three times.

"If you ask Cristiano, he wants to play the 90 minutes". But he is very professional, he always gives everything on the pitch. We know they're a very hard team, especially at their place as they've got fantastic fans. You have to compete, you have to play.

Confident that it already has what it takes to repeat as champion, Madrid bypassed high-profile signings after clinching its 11th European trophy a year ago, limiting its moves to players not in the starting lineup entering the new season.

Although Ronaldo has claimed on multiple occasions that he endeavours to retire at Madrid, de Carvalho insists there is a possibility that the two time Ballon D'or victor could make an emotional return to the place his decorated career began. However, he did say it would make sense to ease him back in with his fitness since they have seven games to play over the course of 22 days and he is just back from injury and a long absence. No one has won back to back Champions League titles, but Los Blancos will try: "Everybody here knows that the goal is to win the next game. This is the biggest club in the world and it should have the best players", said the Portuguese. "He is a great teammate".

Striker Karim Benzema is likely to return to the starting line-up for the first time this campaign after struggling with a hip problem. When it comes to promoting something, it doesn't take a marketing whizz to realise that Ronaldo is far more comfortable on camera than Messi, who has never seemed to particularly relish the limelight.
