We're hoping that means the Xperia XZ can manage at least a day and a half of life - we usually get just over 24 hours of playtime from the Xperia X.

It's been a year since Sony added a new flagship phone to its ever growing range of devices.

Sony says this allows users to capture stunning images in motion with true to life colours in virtually any conditions.

Added to this is the Laser AF sensor with distance sensing technology, which captures lovely blur-free photos in challenging low light conditions. It comes with a dedicated camera button as well apart from the usual volume rockers and power button on the side. But while it doesn't feature optical image stabilization, Sony has kept focus on its SteadyShot Intelligent which uses 5-axis gyroscope measurements to keep photos and videos steady. Xperia XZ provides a 13MP front camera for the selfie with its high sensitivity as high as ISO6400 and 22mm/90-degree wide angle lens. The rear camera supports 4K video recording.

Touting a 5.2in Full HD 1080p display, the Xperia XZ boasts a vibrant screen that uses Bravia technology as seen in the firm's TV sets.

"Sony is committed to making sure we innovate on both fronts - traditional products and also really new ideas, sometimes wacky ideas, but ideas that really wow our customers", Hirai told CNBC in a TV interview.

Despite the diminutive size and specs, the Xperia X Compact shares some key features in common with the newly announced Xperia XZ. But by 2013, its Xperia Z-then the Z1S and Z3 in 2014-was exclusive to T-Mobile and failed to claim a proper stake in the market. At launch it will be available in blue, white or black. We'll update this article when we have Sony's official word on pricing.

The right-hand side of the XZ features the oblong power button with built-in fingerprint sensor, volume rocker and camera launcher button, while the left side sees the SIM and microSD tray.

"We chose to bring the water resistance part into the premium phones and make the other devices more affordable", a Sony spokesman explained.

The Xperia Ear, a smart in-ear hands-free headset, meanwhile, will begin shipping in November, Sony said. The latter is particularly handy if you want to get Huawei-style night light shots. The XZ also inherits Sony's Predictive Hybrid AF for reliability capturing fast-moving subjects. The Sony Xperia X Compact launches 25th September.

The Compact is only available with single SIM support and 32GB of storage, but its larger sibling comes in single-SIM/32GB and dual-SIM/64GB flavours.
