Oviedo High alum Simpson wins 1500 to earn Olympic berth in Brazil

- Duke graduate Shannon Rowbury earned a top-three finish in the women's 1,500 final Sunday to qualify for her third consecutive Olympic Games, while recent Duke graduate Megan Clark posted a top-five finish in the women's pole vault in her first U.S. Olympic Team Trials appearance.

Olympic champion Allyson Felix stunningly failed to make the United States team for Rio in her favourite event, the 200 metres, as her dreams for a rare sprint Olympic double ended at the American trials yesterday.

She made the 400-meter final, but in her signature event - the one where she was hoping to defend her Olympic title - she could not make it through.

"Honestly, disappointed", Felix said in an AP report.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who encouraged me through this whole journey, ” Ostrander said. Oh, and she also bested the junior world record for the 400-meter hurdles.

Tori Bowie finished first and local collegian Deajah Stevens claimed the runner-up spot. It's a long journey, but we got the job done.

McLaughlin, who still has another year at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, N.J., finished in 54.15, which sets a world junior record, improving on the 54.46 she ran at the New Balance Nationals in June to break the 32-year-old record set by Leslie Maxie of Mills (Millbrae, Calif.) in 1984. Felix still has the 400, an event she won last weekend, and will focus on that.

On the same track (Hayward Field at the University of Oregon) one year ago, Ash qualified in the 110-meter hurdles for the IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations) World Championships in Beijing. She'd just made some additional last-minute plans for her summer break-she'll be making a trip to Rio de Jainero, Brazil.

Olympic silver medallist Erik Kynard won the high jump at 2.29 metres, Molly Huddle was first in the women's 5,000 metres (15:05.01) and Barbara Nwaba topped the heptathlon with 6,494 points. "I'm going to do the best I can", she told the news site prior to her qualification to the US Olympic Team. She also was able to hold off fourth-place finisher Kori Carter.

"Sometimes, I get so caught up in the fact that I hadn't lost a hurdles race, and I come here, and these girls are faster than me", said McLaughlin, who admitted to being so nervous earlier in the week she considered pulling out of the meet. Clement is a two-time world champion and the silver medalist from the 2008 Olympics.

Leonel Manzano, the silver medalist in 2012, finished fourth and did not make the team. She finished 11th in the 5,000 in 2012.
