Netflix Leads 2016 Emmys With 54 Noms

The basic cable network made Emmy history today when its various series notched up a total of 56 Primetime Emmy Award nominations - the highest total nominations for a basic cable network in Emmy history. Game Of Thrones took home 12 prizes last year - more than any other show has collected in a single year.

Other minority actors recognized by TV academy voters include Viola Davis, the "How to Get Away with Murder" star who past year became the first woman of color to win a best drama actress trophy and was nominated again. "About damn time, I say".

The Kenya Barris-created show should get a shot at the best comedy trophy for its sophomore season, with its competitors likely to include last year's victor, the political satire "Veep", five-time champ "Modern Family", transgender-themed "Transparent" and Aziz Ansari's "Master of None".

"Game of Thrones" stars Kit Harrington, Maisie Williams and Lena Headey are thrilled to have garnered individual nominations at the Emmy Awards where the HBO show bagged maximum 23 nominations.

American political parody Veep, starring Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is the most nominated comedy on 17.

Max von Sydow was additionally recognized in Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for playing the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven.

Silicon Valley also went up for a new record, from 7 to 11 nominations, including best comedy series and first nom for star Thomas Middledich. HBO's Confirmation, about the battle between Anita Hill and her former employer Clarence Thomas, and All The Way, about the uneasy alliance between President Lyndon Johnson and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, were both nominated for television movie, along with the mystery movie Luther.

That's certainly true of Netflix: Juggernaut House of Cards, which aired its fourth season in March, earned a whopping 13 nominations (that's one for each episode).

Comedy star Amy Schumer secured four nominations, the most given to any one person this year, for her acting and writing in Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy Schumer and Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo.

The Night Manager is up for best limited television series against Fargo, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Roots and American Crime.

U.S. talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will present the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on September 18. The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18 on ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host.
