Jackson takes no-no into 7th, Padres win 5-3 to sweep Giants

The 32-year-old journeyman endeared himself to a new team Sunday even if he left his new hometown yearning in agony after pinch-hitter Connor Gillaspie's three-run homer ended an unlikely no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning Sunday in a 5-3 win over the Giants in front of 35,784 at Petco Park. If Christian Friedrich can beat San Diego native Mike Leake then the Padres will have a 4-game winning streak their longest of the year. And not when the final game featured journeyman Edwin Jackson aiming for a no-hitter in his Padres debut.

Jackson had struck out three, walked four and thrown 72 pitches Sunday in his first big league start since 2014.

Gillaspie s homer cut the Padres lead to 4-3, but Yangervis Solarte tagged Hunter Strickland for a home run in the bottom of the seventh when he jumped on an 0-2 fastball at the top of the zone. He walked five and struck out four.

Jackson once threw a no-hitter in 2010 for the Diamondbacks in which he walked eight batters and threw 149 pitches.

Edwin Jackson was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday morning. Cueto has tossed a complete game in all three of his previous outings against San Diego this season while going 3-0 with a sterling 0.33 ERA.

Cueto (13-1, 2.47 ERA) secured but five outs against the American League as the junior circuit prevailed 4-2 and Cueto took the loss.

Johnny Cueto is ready to get out of San Diego.

Cueto, a right-hander, wasn't feeling good on Tuesday, when surrendering home runs to former teammates Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez. He also reached on a fielding error by Crawford. It was Kemp's 18th and Bethancourt's fifth.

Cueto made it into the sixth, allowing a leadoff walk to Alex Dickerson and a single to Bethancourt before making way for George Kontos.

Added Giants manager Bruce Bochy about Cueto being under the weather: "He wasn't at full strength".

Brandon Maurer saved his third game with a scoreless ninth to secure a sweep of a Giants team that won the first nine meetings of the season.

The post Giants' rotation toppled, Cueto struggles as Padres complete sweep appeared first on Giants Extra.

He said he woke up Sunday with a pain in his left side, but was able to work through it.

"We just couldn't finish the deal", Bochy said. Ryan Schimpf had an RBI single and Jackson collected one as well, his second hit of the game. Peavy started three postseason games for the Red Sox during their 2013 run to the World Series title.
