IN governor Mike Pence likely to be Trump's running mate

While in Washington, he chaired the Republican Study Group, a coalition of hard-core conservatives, which gives him solid bona fides among the grass-roots Tea Party wing of the party that has occasional doubts about Trump's ideological purity.

Donald Trump was forced to delay the unveiling of his running mate on Friday due to the terror attack in Nice, generating new speculation about last minute changes. But some of Trump's children, who have been closely advising their father, are said to favor different candidates. His campaign chair, Paul Manafort, is now in Cleveland, and none of his children are in the state with him.

As the day began, it appeared the decision would come quickly.

Pence was the one who launched the Republican "war" against the Planned Parenthood women's health agency when as a member of congress, he sponsored the first bill to defund Planned Parenthood in 2007, according to a report by Vox, and he did so repeatedly through 2011, when it finally passed the House of Representatives. He told CNN he was expecting to hear about Trump's decision around 1 or 2 p.m. If Mr Pence does not withdraw by the deadline, then another elected Republican can not withdraw in time to fill his spot on the ballot.

All three of the finalists have had extensive conversations with Trump and his family in recent days.

"Most of the rest will come around".

But he and Trump differ on several key issues.

Part of Pence's fate will be known by noon Friday - that's the deadline he faces for filing for re-election in Indiana.

Trump was making his final decision from California, where he is scheduled to attend a series of fundraisers at a distance from many of his closest advisers. However, the documents have not been filed, according to the Republican, who insisted on anonymity because that person was not authorized to publicly discuss Pence's plans.

Christie, in New Jersey, said in an interview with MSNBC, "No matter what phone call (Trump) makes to me today, I will take a deep breath and prepare for tomorrow". That interview came hours before David Samson, whom Christie appointed to chair the powerful Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, pleaded guilty to scheming to get United Airlines to run direct flights between New Jersey and SC, where he has a vacation home.

Sen. Bill Seitz, R-Green Township, agreed that Pence adds experience and gravitas to the Republican ticket. After facing major political pressure, Pence asked the IN legislature to revise the language, which later passed.

Mr Pence, meanwhile, had another pressing deadline looming: he had to decide whether to relinquish his spot on IN ballots before noon on Friday IN order for the Republican party to be able to choose a replacement.

Gingrich, 73, is something of a rabble-rouser who has spent decades in Washington.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was the third person believed to be on Mr Trump's short list.

"He was one of the leaders of the Tea Party Caucus within the U.S. House". He's also become a valuable partner for Trump, joining him at events on the trail and taking on the important role of heading Trump's transition planning.
