Game of Thrones leads Emmys field, again

Ulster County resident and Academy Award victor Melissa Leo was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for portraying Lady Bird Johnson in "All The Way". Season 6 of the HBO series racked up 23 nominations total, including Outstanding Drama Series and six acting nominations.

It's not like FX's spy series had been completely unrecognized - it earned nominations for writing and Margo Martindale won for Outstanding Guest Actress last year - but this year it's finally getting the recognition it deserves: Both Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys scored nods, along with the series for Outstanding Drama.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Cuba Gooding Jr, Tom Hiddleston and Courtney B Vance were also nominated while other big name contenders in the category including Bill Murray and Johnny Depp missed out.

The Emmy nominations being announced Thursday will give TV lovers two months of fodder for debate over whether favorites like "Game of Thrones" or "Fargo" got treated fairly.

The topic of race figured heavily in the limited series category - formerly known as "outstanding miniseries" - with The People v. O.J. Simpson matched up with historical saga Roots and ABC's American Crime. Once again, it was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, an award which it won previous year.

(The Big Bang Theory, for example, boasts dozens of Emmy nods, including four for Best Comedy.) But the 2016 nominations prove that the TV Academy is getting better as television becomes the best it's ever been. "Hi, mama! I know you're watching", Anderson said on the live broadcast. That is probably as much a reflection of the rising tide of quality work across the medium as it is a sign of a decline by the leading cable outlet, even though HBO hit a major speed bump this year with Vinyl.

This year's Drama and Comedy Series nominees include first-timers as well as returning programmes to the Emmy competition: "Black-ish" and "Master of None" are new in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, and "Mr. Robot" and "The Americans" in the Outstanding Drama Series competition.

"Game of Thrones", which won a record 12 Emmys last fall including best drama, gets the chance to claim its second top award.

On the comedy side - "Veep" will get a second opportunity to win best comedy while "Black-ish" also received a nomination for best comedy. I am so happy to be part of this cast and honored to be nominated with such an outstanding group of people and many of my friends. The HBO series wrapped up its last season, and was last year's victor for best comedy series.

Maisie Williams, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke will compete against one another for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series prize.

The 68th Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be held at The Microsoft Theater here on September 18.
