Mets pitcher Matt Harvey weighing season-ending surgery

This is absolutely bad news for Matt Harvey and the New York Mets.

Alderson said Harvey is weighing his options.

New York Mets right-handed starting pitcher Matt Harvey has elected to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

Matt Harvey is headed to the disabled list and could miss the rest of the season if the ominous short-term prognosis is proven true Thursday in St. Louis.

Harvey went 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts this season, and his final win came on May 30.

"We'll evaluate it, but right now he'd be the guy we would lean toward", Collins said. "But from our standpoint the issue just arose after the last start". "So there's a level of concern", Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Right-hander Logan Verrett is poised to take Harvey's start Saturday against the Washington Nationals. "I can't draw any conclusions other than we were fine in '15 and felt this in '16".

According to ESPN, this surgery will address thoracic outlet syndrome in Harvey's shoulder. Among them are scar tissue that can develop from repetitive overuse-the type pitchers can experience when they're "microscopically tearing those areas repeatedly".

"You can definitely have 100% recovery", he said.

It's a devastating blow for Harvey who has tried to tough it out during the entire campaign.

He returned from Tommy John surgery a year ago and went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA in 29 starts covering a career-high 189 1/3 innings. First will the Mets fare ok without the Dark Knight and second, if Harvey has surgery will he be okay in 2017.

One natural question comes to mind.

Meanwhile, Matz and Syndergaard both are pitching with bone spurs in their pitching elbows. The Mets hope that can wait until after the season. The Mets will be down an arm, but at least pitching depth is a strong suit within the organization. With the outlook of TOS surgery if there's a potential silver lining, it's that Harvey is younger than most who have elected for surgery.

Harvey has had complications with his shoulder all year long and on Thursday, reports surfaced that he was considering have the surgery.
