Authorities: Dallas gunman amassed personal arsenal at home

During the search of the suspect's Mesquite home Friday, detectives found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics.

He said he wanted to exterminate whites, "especially white officers", officials said. While there doesn't appear to be any hard data on the subject, security experts and law enforcement officials said they couldn't recall another time when U.S. police have deployed a robot with lethal intent. "He had a choice to come out and we would not harm him, or stay in and we would".

He was a carpentry and masonry specialist, with a rank of private first class, and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal. Officials said a "lone shooter" was involved, 25-year-old Micah Johnson, an army veteran who had served in Afghanistan.

The killing of the five officers was the deadliest single incident for US law enforcement since September 11, 2001.

A recent Facebook like was for The African American Defense League, a group that regularly calls for the killing of police officers, IJR reported.

Glendening said Johnson was set to be removed from the Army in September 2014 because of the incident.

The Army says Johnson served in the Army Reserve and did one tour of duty in Afghanistan.

When it was clear that he would not go without trying to kill or wound more police officers, police used an explosive device on a remote-controlled robot to kill Johnson - the first time a police department in the US has been known to use such a tactic to take out a suspect.

The shootings came amid a protest over the fatal police shootings of two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota this week. The lawyer also said that at the time Johnson's higher ups had recommended that he be dishonorably discharged.

Brown said the suspects "triangulated" in the downtown area where the protesters were marching and had "some knowledge of the route" they would take.

The massive investigation continues into the awful tragedy that occurred in Dallas yesterday [Thursday, July 7] and now more information is emerging about the shooter, Micah Johnson.

"We all knew he was a pervert because he got caught stealing girls panties but murdering cops is a different story", Wells Newsome, a former bunkmate of Johnson's, wrote on Facebook.

Authorities in Dallas have defended their decision to use an explosive-laden robot to kill a man who shot dead five white police officers in the city. "I ask you to turn to each-other not against each-other as we move forward". The Southern Poverty Law Center said Johnson also "liked" the National of Islam and the Black Riders Liberation Party, which it described as "hate groups".

Either way, Johnson horrified a nation and wounded seven people in addition to the officers killed.

It posted online: "It is time to visit Louisiana and hold a barbecue".

Before dying, the police chief said, the suspect also stated that he acted alone and was not affiliated with any groups, Brown said.

He says he played basketball with him at a park near the house.

Johnson's step-mother Donna Ferrier Johnson, who is white, posted a picture of him on Facebook decked out in fatigues and driving a military vehicle.

Cooper added: "It's the quiet ones that just do the most devastating stuff".

Reynolds live streamed the aftermath of the shooting in a widely shared Facebook video.

"To our brothers and sisters who wear the badge - I want you to know that I am deeply grateful that the hard and risky work that you do every day - to keep our streets safe and our nation secure", she said.
